The Funeral Mass is not permitted on solemnities of obligation, on Holy Thursday and the Easter Triduum, and the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and the Easter Season.  (See General Instructin of the Roman Missal, # 336 and the Order of Christian Funerals # 178).  The Funeral liturgy outside Mass may be used when the funeral  mass is not permitted.  In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles there are four holy days of obligation: Assumption (August 15), All Saints (November 1), Immaculate Conception (December 8), and Christmas (December 25).  When August 15 of November 1 fall on a Saturday or a Monday, the holy day is no longer considered a solemnity of obligation and the Funeral Mass may be celebrated.
